Sample sets

Sample sets — a curated path across tea’s great categories

Taste six traditions, three oolong styles, or a decade of pu-erh evolution in one compact box. Our sample sets are built by Teamotea’s senior experts to guide your palate from first sip to refined comparison. Each box contains 4–8 pre‑measured portions, selected to teach, challenge, and delight — whether you’re a newcomer or an advanced grader preparing for a pairing study.

The art of sampling: why small portions open big worlds

A single sample can rewrite your understanding of a category. That’s the idea behind our sample sets — they aren’t leftovers, but carefully chosen threads that weave a story. The practice of sending tiny portions to distant buyers started centuries ago along the Tea Horse Road, when merchants needed to prove quality without hauling whole cakes. Today it’s a luxury: a chance to taste without committing to a full brick.

Our curators work from season to season, pulling fresh harvests, matured vintages, and iconic styles into thematic sets. For a newcomer, the Starter six‑category set turns the tea map into a clear sequence — start with a silvery white tea, move through a grassy green, a floral oolong, a honeyed black, a ripe pu-erh, and a dark hei cha. Each step teaches structure, temperature, and aroma evolution. For the dedicated collector, the Aged sheng vertical — 2010 / 2015 / 2020 — is a living timeline. Amgalan Chin selected three pressings from a single Lancang village, stored slowly in Kunming, so the taster can witness how citrus-peel notes soften into camphor and leather over a decade. The Oolong three traditions set — Wuyi rock tea, Anxi tieguanyin, Phoenix Mí Lán Xiāng dancong — reveals how soil, oxidation, and roast define three distinct oolong worlds in one sitting.

We encourage drinkers to brew these samples with intention. Use a gaiwan or small glazed pot, keep the leaf‑to‑water ratio consistent, and jot down what you smell and taste. For those who want to go deeper, the free encyclopedia at thetea.app maps out each terroir and processing step, while the tasting courses at tea.school offer structured frameworks for sensory evaluation. Our sample sets are designed as the bridge — you taste, you learn, and then you choose which full‑scale leaf to invite into your cupboard.

This season’s sample collections

Three new sets, each a guided tasting journey designed by our experts. Available for a limited run — once the seasonal harvests fade, these combinations retire.

A buyer's note

How to get the most from a sample set

Check the portion size

Our samples range from 5 g to 10 g — enough for a full gongfu session or a few western‑style steeps. Each pack lists the exact weight, so you can plan your teaware and water volume accordingly.

Use a consistent vessel

To compare teas fairly, stick to the same gaiwan or small teapot throughout the set. This eliminates vessel‑induced differences and lets the leaf’s character shine.

Match water temperature to the tea

Delicate greens and white teas want cooler water (75–85°C), oolongs bloom at 90–95°C, pu-erh and black teas near boiling. The set’s guide card gives exact recommendations.

Smell before you sip

Pour off the rinse, lift the lid, and inhale. Aroma notes — melon, pine, cocoa — often appear more vividly than on the tongue. This heightens your later taste perception.

Keep a tasting journal

Jot down first impressions, mouthfeel, and how the tea evolves over infusions. Comparing notes across a vertical set reveals how age transforms sheng pu-erh, and across a category set it carves precise flavour memory.

Store leftovers wisely

Once opened, re‑seal the sample pouch tightly and keep it away from light, heat, and odours. For aged pu-erh samples, a breathable clay jar is ideal if you plan to revisit them over weeks.

Common questions

Asked, answered.

How many teas come in a sample set?

Each set holds 4 to 8 individual samples, depending on the theme. The starter set contains 6 teas, the oolong set 3, and the vertical set 3 ages.

Can I brew just one sample at a time?

Absolutely. The portions are pre‑weighed for a single session. If you want to compare side‑by‑side, prepare small gaiwans for each — it’s a classic cupping method.

What if I love one tea and want more?

Every sample set includes a link to the corresponding full‑size product on worldtea.shop, letting you order a cake or pouch directly. Look for the product card inside the box.

Are sample sets suitable for tea tastings with friends?

Yes, they’re ideal for group exploration. You can divide the leaves — just scale the teaware proportionally — and lead a guided tasting using the included notes.

How should I store opened sample packs?

Re‑seal the airtight zip and keep the pack in a cool, dark cupboard. For short‑term storage (up to 3 months), the original pouch is fine if pressed properly. For longer, transfer to an opaque tin.

Do you offer a sample set for a specific region?

Currently we offer sets built around tea categories and aging. We plan to release regional deep dives — Yunnan sheng, Fujian oolongs, Anhui greens — later this year. Sign up to tea.community for early access.

Can I reuse the leaves from a sample for multiple infusions?

Most of our teas open up over many steeps. A 5 g sample in a 100 ml gaiwan can yield 8–15 infusions. The box insert suggests steep times for each tea.
